Digital Art History Initiative

This ongoing initiative endeavors to foster a dynamic dialogue on the integration of digital tools in addressing art historical research questions. Its aims span from elucidating the foundational theoretical and methodological principles of Digital Art History to evaluating the possibilities and constraints of spatial methodologies and digital reconstructions in research. Delving into topics such as data models and their semantics as well as exploring the cutting-edge capabilities of computer vision, the initiative serves as a platform for collaborative discussions across departments and between art historians and digital specialists.
Over monthly meetings, with the involvement of scientists from the BHMPI DH Lab and external specialists, the program offers: hands-on training to impart essential skills in data mapping, cleaning, and reconciliation; research seminars; and more informal reading group sessions. Furthermore, it establishes a readily accessible aid for researchers aiming to utilize digital elements into their projects. By encouraging interdisciplinary collaborations and addressing the evolving landscape of digital tools, this initiative seeks to propel the field of Digital Art History forward and equip researchers with the necessary expertise to navigate the digital dimensions of their inquiries.
