Post-Truth and Hybrid Fake Structures as Artistic Strategy from the Second Half of the 20th to the Beginning of the 21st Century

Oleksandr Sushynskyi

This dissertation project aims to describe the main characteristics of the phenomenon of post-truth and study the artistic practices from the 20th to the 21st centuries by using hybrid fake structures and fiction as a method. It investigates some of the art projects, illustrating how fiction works in terms of reconstructing history, collective memory and archives, and considers in this light the subversive potential of criticism inherent in parafictional art practices. The project also shows how a fiction or a “fake(o)logy” (imaginary science to research fake structured and hybrid reality) is closely connected with temporality, namely, the mode of the future. The future never arrives – and therein lies the problem. In this state of suspension, uncertainty and the need to traverse uncharted territories always remain.
