Catalogue raisonné of Italian Baroque Painting in the Kunsthistorische Museum Vienna, Volume 2: Römische Schule (Roman School)
Gudrun Swoboda

The focus of this research project is the Catalogue Raisonné of Italian Baroque Painting in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, Vol 2: Roman School. It examines 70 paintings from the museum’s collection, attributed to the Roman school of the 17th and 18th centuries. The collection features renowned works, including Pietro da Cortona’s Return of Hagar, Carlo Maratti’s Death of St. Joseph, and Pompeo Batoni’s Double Portrait of Emperor Joseph II and Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo. Alongside these, the project will highlight lesser-known works by artists such as Pietro de’Pietri, Ciro Ferri, and Filippo Lauri, as well as previously unpublished paintings by Girolamo Troppa, Aurelio Luini, and Tommaso Dovini.
This project builds upon a prior research initiative, funded by the Austrian Research Fund (FWF), which focused on Caravaggio and the international Caravaggisti in Rome. That earlier endeavor involved technological and art historical examination and cataloguing of around 50 paintings in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, published in 2010 with the support of the Getty Foundation. The important findings regarding attribution, painting techniques, and iconography led to the decision to extend the research to cover the museum’s full collection of Roman paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Part of this research will be conducted at the Bibliotheca Hertziana.
