The Architectural Drawings of Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and his Circle
Georg Schelbert

The project completes the corpus of architectural drawings by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and his circle. The first two volumes of this comprehensive catalog, which was compiled by an international group of outstanding experts on Italian Renaissance architecture, were already published in 1994 and 2000 under the leadership of the then director of the Institute, Christoph Luitpold Frommel.
The manuscript of the fourth and final volume, which contains the drawings of palaces and other residential buildings, was completed for submission to the publisher in 2024 and will be printed in early 2025. With the thematic focus of the fourth volume, an area of Sangallo’s oeuvre is presented that is particularly innovative in character, as Sangallo’s projects set standards in planning procedures as well as in the structure and design of representative residential buildings of the early modern period.
