Bellori Edition Project

Marieke von Bernstorff

Published in 1672, Giovan Pietro Bellori’s The Lives of the Modern Painters, Sculptors, and Architects is one of the most important and influential source texts of the 17th century. The continuous research interest attests to the undisputed significance of Bellori’s writings, long appreciated both for its literary complexity and as a source for methodological and art-historiographical research as much as for its documentary qualities. The critical bilingual edition of Bellori’s Vite, promoted by the research department of Tristan Weddigen, provides the first German translation of the biographies, as well as a complement to the Italian originals and a scholarly commentary on the latest scientific findings with an analysis of their historiographical, art-theoretical and source-critical content. The edition is printed by Wallstein Verlag in 13 successive volumes. Nine volumes have already been published and the complete edition should be available in print by 2026.
